Session management aka cookies in Advanced REST Client

In recent update there is a new session management mechanism. After last big update some of you complained about lack of cookies support. The networking in Chrome apps is separated from Chrome. Therefore it wasn't possible (and still isn't) to use cookies set in Chrome tab.



However, the app is now equipped in it's own session management.

Cookie store works similar as browsers do. There might be some differences - mostly about when the cookie is deleted from the store - comparing to a browser but general idea and storing / compering / rejecting or accepting algorithms are the same as defined in the spec.

Now the Advanced REST Client will accept cookies from the remote server, save them in local database (if cookies match domain and path as described in the spec). It will send back this cookies to the server during next call where domain and path match the cookie.

You can obtain a session cookie from the login form (for example) and use this cookie automatically while testing the API. It won't work, however, with cookies set in chrome tab.
Chrome apps don't have and most probably will never have access to browser's cookie storage (or any browser data). As the author I can't do much about it since it's a Chromium team design decision.

Note: Cookies are saved locally on your computer in the app's database. It means that other apps do not have access to it. You can be sure that session cookies can't leak outside the app because of the cookie store.
Be aware however that the exported file with request data will include "Set-Cookie" headers if there was any in exported requests.

Advanced REST Client is not in a tab anymore

Well, it can't.
Recently I've published an update of the Advanced Rest Client. New version has been upgraded to Chrome app (from so called legacy app) because old ones are deprecated in Chrome and the support for them has been removed in Chrome Web Store.


As an author there was very little I could do in this situation. I needed to upgrade the app so it still can be published Chrome Web Store. Many of you complains that the app no longer opens in Chrome tab but instead in new window. This is how Chrome apps behave and there's no going back. You can always discuss the issue with the Chromium team.

From my side I can only give you advice to open new instance of the app if you need more than one window:

After a latest update some of you has issues with certificates in the app. You have probably seen one of this screens:

There is a solution for this. But first two words on underlying cause.
The app is a Chrome app and it is not using the same resources as the browser. Even if you allow the Chrome to enter the webpage that have certificate issues the app will not even know about it. And there is very little to do about it because the connection to external resources are controlled by Chrome.


If you see NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID error - well, generate new certificate with proper domain name. Certificates must work on the domain that they were set for.

Fix NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID error in Advanced REST Client

It's quite easy. All its gone when you install the self signed certificate in the browser's certificates storage.

There is a video instruction of how to do it:


1. Click on the red lock in the URL bar and then details. Security tab in Chrome DevTools will appear. Click View certificate.

In new overlay select Details tab and click Export button. Save the file somewhere choosing PKCS # 7 single certificate option.

2. Open Chrome settings and under advanced find section Manage certificates button and click it.
In Authorities tab find Import button and open previously saved certificate.
Then select at least "Trust this certificate for identifying websites.".

After you restart Chrome and app it should work just fine.

Data sharing options in new Advanced REST client

With new version of the app you have more options for data sharing in the app.
First at all Google Drive integration has been rewritten from scratch. It works similar to previous implementation but require less permissions from you. Instead of asking you where to save the data the app will save it in the root folder of your Drive. From there you can place it wherever you want and share it with anyone.


There is one but. The app can only access files that has been created or previously opened by it. In other words, if someone shared a file with you, you need to open it from the Drive UI for the first time. Later you will be able to open the file directly from the APP UI.

To open shared with you file enter your dive folder (drive.google.com) and double click the file that you’d like to open with the app. Advanced REST client must be already installed on your computer and you should already authorize the app with Drive (requesting Drive list for example).

If the app is authorized you’ll be able to see it in file’s “open with” options:


The same effect you achieve with double click on file.
Then you’ll be redirected to new URL and the app will handle file open for you.

If the file was created by you or you’ve already opened the file using Drive UI then you can open the file using “Open from Drive” button in “Saved” screen:




Other method to share your data is file import and export. You can select some or all your requests from saved / history screens and export them to file.




Later you can import the file in the import/export screen available in main menu.

With new version of the app you have more control over data sharing. It should be easier for you to share your data with your team and work on the same project with others.
